Yoga + Mindfulness Practices

What is Yoga, Meditation and breath WOrk?

Yoga is a mind and body practice with a 5,000-year history in ancient Indian philosophy. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. It is based upon poses that promote improved control of the mind and body, and enhance over all well-being. There are several different types of yoga and many disciplines within the practice.

Meditation and breath work are as important to the practice as the physical postures. Meditation is the practice of observing our thoughts without judgement. The benefits of a meditation practice - including stress reduction and enhanced self awareness - remain with the practitioner well after the meditation session is over. Like medication, breath work can go can go beyond the incorporation of breathing during your physical yoga flow and can be a powerful therapeutic practice that promotes rest and relaxation. More than an exercise of breathing correctly or with intent, various breathing techniques - such as box breathing and alternate nostril breath - are tools for healing.

I specialize in hatha yoga with a wellness focus.

Yoga should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, health or physical fitness. “Hatha” is translated as ha meaning "sun" and tha meaning "moon." This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose. Hatha yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation. It asks us to bring our attention to our breath, which helps us to still the fluctuations of the mind and be more present in the unfolding of each moment.

Wellness focused yoga centers simple movements that are done mindfully, and produces a profound effect in stress management, improved physical health, changed behavior patterns and supports healthier life choices.
